Samosir, Lake Toba – Trail of The Kings Lake Toba has been officially announced as part of the international UTMB World Series 2025 calendar. UTMB, or Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, is the world’s most prestigious and competitive ultramarathon event held annually in Chamonix, France.

This year, the UTMB World Series selected Samosir Island in the Lake Toba region, North Sumatra, as one of its 54 global hosts for 2025. Notably, Lake Toba is the only location in Indonesia chosen for this prestigious international race. The large-scale trail running competition will take place from 17 to 19 October 2025, traversing challenging routes set against the breathtaking natural landscape of Lake Toba.

On October 17, the series of activities will kick off in the Lake Toba area. The day includes the Tour de Samosir with both Indonesian star runners and international participants. Additionally, a race briefing and welcome dinner will follow for VIPs and invited runners. Organizers expect the event to attract over 5,000 runners from 25 countries, ranging from elite athletes to enthusiastic amateurs.

Meaning Behind Trail of The Kings

The name Trail of The Kings is more than symbolic. This competition was born as a tribute to the historical legacy of the Batak people. Historically, the Batak acted as local leaders or “kings” who built communities and journeyed through forests and rugged terrain. This event revives that same spirit of leadership and exploration through a wilderness race.

October 18, 2025: Adrenaline-Fueled Trails

Caldera Crown 100K
Starting from Marianna Resort & Convention, Marclan Collection. This is the main challenge of Trail of The Kings. The course features extreme terrain and intense elevation. It guides runners through ancient calderas, lush tropical forests, and the breathtaking expanse of Lake Toba. It pushes both physical and mental limits. Finishers will earn 3 Running Stones. These count as qualification points toward UTMB® Mont-Blanc, one of the most prestigious trail events in the world.

Ultimate Expedition 60K
This category starts at Waterfront City, Pangururan. Though shorter in distance, the route demands strength and full concentration. Finishers will receive 2 Running Stones as recognition of their achievement and as a step toward international trail competitions.

King’s Ascent 28K
Additionally, this category starts from Waterfront City and targets intermediate runners aiming to sharpen their trail running skills. With hilly and technical terrain, it tests both endurance and technique. As a reward, finishers earn 1 Running Stone to mark their achievement.

Legacy Dash 10K
Held on October 19, this category caters to recreational runners wanting to experience the feel of an international competition without intense pressure.

Legend Leap 5K
Also taking place on October 19, this category offers a lighter but still exciting running experience. It’s designed as an entry point for those new to trail running.

Kids Race
Also scheduled for October 19, this category is specifically for children. More than just a race, it represents the organizers’ commitment to fostering early enthusiasm for sports and paving the way for the next generation of trail runners.

The event has received widespread support from both national and international entities. North Sumatra Governor, Muhammad Bobby Afif Nasution, stated that the presence of the UTMB World Series will bring strategic benefits to both tourism and the local economy.

“The landscape of Lake Toba offers a running experience like no other, enriched by an authentic cultural atmosphere,” said Jeffrey Edwards, Asia Managing Director of the World Triathlon Corporation.
