Bali electric tram plans are moving ahead, introducing a new way to travel through the island’s southern tourism corridor.
The Bali Provincial Government, Badung Regency Government, and PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) are advancing plans for a battery-powered electric tram connecting I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport with Canggu. The three parties signed a cooperation agreement on 1 September 2026.
The proposed 13.1-kilometer corridor will connect the airport with key tourism areas, including Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, and Canggu. The project will develop in phases. The final route, station locations, and operational details will depend on further technical studies and coordination.
The first phase covers approximately 6.6 kilometers between the airport and Legian, with commercial operations targeted for 2028. The project will develop the Legian–Seminyak–Canggu section in a later phase.
How the Bali Electric Tram Could Change Travel
The proposed Bali electric tram will operate on batteries, eliminating the need for overhead electrical cables. Officials have highlighted its compact size and lower noise levels. The full airport-to-Canggu journey could take around 30 minutes once the corridor is operational.
For visitors, the significance goes beyond simply getting from the airport to Canggu faster.
Better connections could make it easier for travellers to explore beyond their accommodation without relying entirely on private vehicles. It could also offer another way to experience southern Bali.
Keeping Bali at the Heart of the Development
Officials are planning the tram with hotels, tourist attractions, the environment, residential areas, and local communities in mind. They have also emphasized tourist comfort and Bali’s distinctive character throughout the development.
As Canggu grows as a destination for beaches, dining, wellness, and creative experiences, better connectivity could become an increasingly important part of the experience.
Looking Ahead to a More Connected Canggu
For hospitality, this evolution creates an interesting opportunity. Swarga Suites Bali Berawa, located along Berawa Beach in Canggu, already sits within the destination that the proposed transport corridor aims to connect. The all-suite beachfront property offers 60 suites, with facilities including a swimming pool, wellness center, fitness center, dining spaces, and a rooftop bar.
Its location also places guests close to the wider Canggu experience while remaining directly connected to the quieter rhythm of Berawa Beach.

Looking further ahead, Swarga Residence is planned to open in 2028 with 20 serviced apartments, adding another dimension to the property’s future. Designed for longer-stay travellers, the residence will offer guests the opportunity to settle into Canggu and experience the destination at a slower pace.
For longer stays, better connectivity could make it easier to move between the beach, dining spots, attractions, and other parts of Bali.
From Traffic Challenge to Travel Experience
The Bali electric tram project remains in development. Authorities will confirm further details on the route, stations, construction schedule, and operations as the project progresses.
For Canggu, better connectivity could change how visitors experience the area. For Berawa, it could complement the area’s appeal as a place to stay, explore, and settle in.
As Canggu enters its next chapter, Swarga Suites Bali Berawa and the upcoming Swarga Residence will grow alongside it.
