Vesak Day 2025: A Moment to Reflect on Self-Control and Wisdom

Marclan International - Vesak Day - Hari Waisak 2025

Vesak or Waisak Day in Indonesia is annually marked by the beauty and sanctity of Borobudur and Mendut Temples. These two temples are both places of worship and cultural heritage. They are the focal points of meaningful celebrations for the Buddhist community, not only in Indonesia but also internationally.

One of the key traditions during the Tri Suci Waisak commemoration in Indonesia is the procession from Mendut Temple to Borobudur Temple. Therefore, more than just a tradition, Vesak serves as a reminder to reflect on the values of self-control and wisdom taught by Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha.

This holy day also provides an opportunity to honor the Buddha’s spiritual journey, marked by three pivotal events: his birth, the attainment of enlightenment, and his passing. These milestones form the core of the reflections and observances that Buddhists hold on this sacred day.

Typically, Vesak Day is celebrated during the full moon, also known as Purnama Sidhi. This year, Vesak will be observed on May 12, 2025, under the theme “Enhance Self-Control and Wisdom, Create World Peace.” This theme reinforces the importance of self-control and wisdom as essential foundations for building peaceful lives in the global community.

The Presence of Buddhists in Indonesia

Indonesia is home to 2.004 million Buddhists, as of December 31, 2024. In other words, this accounts for 0.71% of the country’s total population of 282.477 million. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, Jakarta has the highest number of Buddhists, with 382,000 followers. This was also followed by North Sumatra with 348,215. Indonesia is also a region that dozens of Southeast Asian monks pass through during the thudong ritual. Like other countries, Indonesia has its own distinct traditions for celebrating Vesak.
