QRIS Indonesia continues to expand internationally. On August 17, 2025, Bank Indonesia officially launched QRIS payments in Japan, marking a historic milestone for Indonesia’s digital economy. Through this initiative, Indonesian tourists visiting Japan can now make payments directly using the QRIS app on their smartphones, without the need to exchange currency or carry large amounts of cash.
QRIS Indonesia Strengthening Tourism and Digital Economy
The implementation of QRIS in Japan not only brings convenience for travelers but also strengthens economic collaboration between Indonesia and Japan. Indonesian tourists can pay at merchants connected to Japan’s local QR code network, while Japanese tourists in Indonesia can use their own payment apps seamlessly through QRIS.
This integration is expected to enhance bilateral tourism. Data from the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism shows that Japan remains one of the top destinations for Indonesian travelers, with increasing demand for easier, safer, and more practical digital payments abroad.
QRIS Expansion Plan to China
After its success in Japan, Bank Indonesia announced that QRIS will soon be tested in China, one of the world’s largest digital payment markets. The pilot project is expected to begin later this year, focusing on major cities and key tourism destinations. If successful, this initiative will make transactions for Indonesian tourists in China much easier, given the country’s highly advanced digital ecosystem.
Benefits for MSMEs and the Wider Community
Beyond the convenience for tourists, QRIS international expansion also supports micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Indonesian merchants gain exposure to international consumers, while local businesses benefit from reduced cash handling and greater financial inclusion.
The launch of QRIS Indonesia in Japan on August 17, 2025, provides easier cross-border payments for Indonesian tourists and strengthens Indonesia’s role in the global digital economy. With expansion to China planned by the end of the year, QRIS is positioning itself as a key driver of tourism, MSME growth, and international economic collaboration.
