The Mudik ke Jakarta Holiday program launched by the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government aims to attract visitors to the capital during the Eid al-Fitr travel season. While millions of residents typically leave the city to return to their hometowns, the initiative encourages travellers to spend their Lebaran holidays in Jakarta instead.
Every year, the mass homecoming tradition known as ‘Mudik’ transforms Jakarta into a peaceful city. While the phenomenon usually marks a temporary slowdown in urban activity, the provincial government sees it as an opportunity. With fewer crowds and lighter traffic, Jakarta can offer a more relaxed environment for tourism, shopping, and leisure.
The campaign carries the tagline “Jakarta Lengang, Liburan dan Belanja Senang, Cuan Datang,” which roughly translates to “A quieter Jakarta, joyful holidays and shopping, prosperity follows.” Through this program, the government hopes to keep the city’s tourism and retail sectors active while residents travel out of town for the holiday.
Turning the Mudik Season into an Opportunity
According to the provincial administration, the large-scale movement of people leaving Jakarta during Eid is inevitable. Rather than viewing it purely as an outflow, the government is positioning the moment as a chance to invite visitors from other regions to explore the capital.
To support this effort, the city has partnered with shopping centres, hotels, transportation providers, and tourism operators to create attractive holiday packages and promotional offers throughout Ramadan and the Lebaran period.
One of the highlights is a citywide retail campaign called Jakarta Festive Wonder, which involves 101 shopping centres offering discounts of up to 70–80 per cent. The Ramadan sale runs from March 4 to March 31, giving visitors a chance to enjoy major shopping deals while exploring the capital.
Promotions Supporting the Mudik ke Jakarta Holiday Program

A variety of travel incentives have also been introduced to make visiting Jakarta during the holiday more appealing. These include:
- Hotel promotions
- Shopping vouchers provided by the ITC Group
- Special airfare and train ticket prices are offered through Citilink and Kereta Api Indonesia.
By combining accommodation deals, shopping discounts, and travel promotions, the government aims to create a comprehensive holiday experience for visitors coming to Jakarta.
Tourism Packages to Jakarta’s Popular Attractions
The Mudik ke Jakarta Holiday campaign also promotes travel packages to several of Jakarta’s most popular attractions. Among them are:
- Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, a cultural park showcasing Indonesia’s diverse regional heritage
- Taman Impian Jaya Ancol, a coastal recreation complex known for its theme parks and entertainment venues
- Ragunan Zoo, one of the largest zoological parks in Southeast Asia
These attractions remain key highlights for families and domestic tourists looking for leisure activities during the long holiday break.
Free Public Transportation During the Mudik ke Jakarta Holiday
Another incentive designed to enhance the visitor experience is the free public transportation policy during the Eid celebration. On the day of the holiday, several major transport systems will operate without charge, including:
- MRT Jakarta
- LRT Jakarta
- TransJakarta
The initiative is expected to make it easier for visitors to move around the city and explore various attractions without worrying about transportation costs.
A Quiet Jakarta, A Different Stay Experience

While some hotels are participating in the government’s official promotion list, others continue to offer their own unique experiences for visitors looking to enjoy Jakarta during the quieter holiday period. Properties such as Hotel Des Indes Menteng and TMG Hotel Tebet provide comfortable and well-located options for travellers who want to explore the capital during Lebaran.
Both hotels benefit from strategic locations that make it easy for guests to access Jakarta’s key areas. Located in the historic Menteng district, Hotel Des Indes Menteng sits close to major government offices, cultural landmarks, and shopping destinations in Central Jakarta. Meanwhile, TMG Hotel Tebet offers convenient access to the vibrant South Jakarta area, known for its culinary spots, lifestyle hubs, and connectivity to other parts of the city.
During the lebaran holiday, staying in these well-positioned neighbourhoods allows visitors to experience the city more comfortably. Both hotels remain strong accommodation choices for travellers seeking convenience, accessibility, and a relaxed city experience during the festive season.
