The story of Hotel Des Indes began in 1829 when Antoine Surleon Chaulan turned a former girls’ school into a hotel in Batavia. The name “Des Indes” was given in 1856 on the suggestion of writer Eduard Douwes Dekker. During the colonial era, the hotel became known for many “firsts,” including being the first place in Indonesia to serve ice cubes and cold drinks on Christmas Eve in 1846. It also witnessed history when members of the Preparatory Committee for Independence met there, before moving their meeting to Admiral Maeda’s house due to a curfew. Today, those stories are brought back to life in Menteng — carrying the prestigious Des Indes name with colonial architecture, a relaxing atmosphere in every corner, and a location surrounded by gardens, museums, and art galleries.
