Dollar Soars, Domestic Travelers Turn to Holidays Within Indonesia

As the long Eid holiday approaches, a significant shift in travel patterns has emerged among Indonesian travellers. Global economic instability has become the main factor reshaping the country’s travel landscape. The U.S. dollar has surged against the Indonesian rupiah, reaching around Rp17,000.

As a result, many local travellers are turning their attention to domestic destinations instead of international trips. This phenomenon is not only driven by the rising cost of overseas travel due to the weakening rupiah but also exacerbated by escalating geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The ongoing conflict in the region has reduced interest among Indonesians travelling abroad. The situation has been further complicated by reports of several international flights being cancelled or delayed, leaving many travellers stranded and unable to return to their home countries on schedule. These uncertainties have strengthened the public’s preference for holidays that feel safer, closer to home, and more affordable amid economic pressure.

At the same time, Indonesia’s domestic tourism sector is seeing new opportunities. With fewer people planning overseas trips, many travellers are once again exploring destinations within the country. Several of Indonesia’s top destinations are expected to see a surge in domestic visitors. Here are some of the most popular choices:

Bali

Bali Quality Tourism - Marclan International

The Island of the Gods remains a favourite destination for local travellers. Its world-famous beaches and rich cultural heritage continue to attract visitors from across the country. Many travellers also see Bali as a “second home”, where they can enjoy international-standard facilities without dealing with passports and visas.

The island offers a wide range of accommodations, from luxury villas to budget-friendly stays. Direct flights from many Indonesian cities also make the destination easy to reach. These conveniences make Bali one of the most practical holiday choices despite rising travel costs.

Yogyakarta

This historic city continues to charm visitors year after year. Domestic tourist arrivals already increased during the recent Christmas and New Year holidays, and the trend is expected to continue through the Eid season.

Yogyakarta offers a complete travel experience. Visitors can explore iconic heritage sites such as Borobudur Temple and Prambanan Temple. Adventure seekers often head to Mount Merapi or the beaches along the southern coast. The city is also known for its legendary local cuisine, which remains affordable for most travellers.

Bandung

For residents of the greater Jakarta area, Bandung has long been a favourite weekend getaway. Its cool mountain climate and vibrant culinary scene draw visitors throughout the year. The city’s many factory outlets also attract shoppers looking for branded fashion at discounted prices.

In addition, the scenic areas of Lembang and Dago Pakar offer numerous villas and hotels with beautiful views. These options make Bandung an ideal destination for a relaxing escape without stretching one’s travel budget.

Lake Toba

Offering spectacular natural beauty, Lake Toba has long been recognised as one of Indonesia’s most captivating natural destinations. As one of the largest volcanic lakes in the world, Lake Toba presents a tranquil landscape, with Samosir Island at its centre. The island is rich in the culture and traditions of the Batak people, adding depth and uniqueness to every visitor’s experience.

The destination is an ideal choice for travellers who wish to enjoy world-class natural beauty in Indonesia at a more economical cost compared to travelling abroad.

The Marianna Resort's Building

Travellers who want to experience this natural setting more closely, staying at Marianna Resort & Convention Tuktuk Samosir can be a great option. Located in the Tuktuk area on Samosir Island, the resort offers a peaceful atmosphere with direct views of Lake Toba. Surrounded by nature, it provides a relaxing environment where guests can fully unwind.

This trend is also encouraging Indonesia’s domestic tourism industry to continue improving service quality while strengthening promotional efforts. Amid ongoing global uncertainty, the idea of “holidaying in one’s own country” is no longer seen as merely an alternative. It has evolved into a practical, smart, and enjoyable first choice for many travellers.
